Summary: There was a reason why Billy remembered the splinter Dom had gotten on the set of FotR.

Author's Note: This is complete unbeta'd, although I've combed through it myself. I wrote it in 2007 and decided, why not.

There was a reason Billy remembered the splinter Dom had gotten during the filming of FotR on the dock at the Brandywine river. The way Dom’s face had gone white, as though someone had chopped off his foot instead of merely pierced the skin on the bottom, sweat pouring down his face.

Billy remembered Dom clutching him desperately when they pulled it out, he knew what his eyes must’ve looked like then. They were probbaly crazed with worry, forehead creased as he turned to look at the other hobbits, Sean and Elijah huddled together, watching with wide eyes. And then the medic had pulled it out and it had been tiny, maybe an inch at most, nowhere near the size they had all anticipated and Billy had been so relieved all he could do was laugh shaking his head in bemusement.

His heart had gradually stopped pounding and he shoved aside the feelings of panic that had swelled beneath the surface, along with other feelings he did not want to name.

So when Billy settled down on the couch in some anonymous as you can get hotel room in Ireland during filming to watch Lost, the same as he did every Wednesday he hadn’t anticipated what he would feel.

The sight of Dom walking through the forest, arguing about superheroes made him laugh because it was classic Dom, classic Fellowship.

It was like one of the Sunday morning outings with the hobbits and Orlando to go surfing, arguing while trekking in the warm New Zealand sun. But Billy wasn’t there with him now, not on screen, and neither were Elijah, Sean or Orlando who was most likely off filming some extravagant adventure movie. And so when the arrow shot towards Dom, no, Charlie, Billy found himself unable to breath, gripping his t-shirt near his own throat, as though he had been the one pierced by the rock blade of an arrow in the neck.

Before he could stop himself Billy was reaching for his cell phone, dialing one in his speed dial and waiting with bated breath.

When he heard the voice of his best friend tears sparked in his eyes and he took a large, choking breath then spoke. “I love you Dom.” He murmured, his accent thickened by emotion.

“Billy? What’s wrong? Do you need me to come see you?” Dom’s own voice was thick with sleep, drowsy he squinted at the alarm clock, startled by the late night phone call as well as the tears he could hear in Billy’s voice. “What is it?”

Billy sucked in another breath and laughed weekly. “No, no I’m fine. You stay where you are, you’ll be to see me soon enough. I just…I wanted you to know.”

Dom smiled, sitting up in his bed. “I love you too Pip,” He murmured softly, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he pictured his best friend, the charming little Scot, most likely huddled on the couch, remote clutched in one hand.

“So tell me what’s going on with you, on the set? Still going on about you and Evangeline I imagine…” Billy teased lightly, smiling happily as he fell deep into conversation, like they had late at night in New Zealand, dragged back years before, when there wasn't a ocean between them...
